Pathankot to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: taxi, bus and train options explained

Himsafar Editorial · Destination guides · 17 July 2026 · 6 min read

Pathankot to Dharamshala is roughly 85–90 km by road and typically takes 3 to 3.5 hours. A private taxi from Pathankot railway station costs approximately ₹2,200–3,500 depending on the vehicle, while HRTC buses run through the day from about ₹215 for an ordinary service. McLeod Ganj sits about 10 km beyond Dharamshala, adding 30–45 minutes to the trip.

Pathankot is the main broad-gauge railhead for the Kangra Valley. If you are arriving by overnight train from Delhi, this guide covers what actually happens after you step off at Pathankot — and how to choose between a cab, a bus and the famous but currently unreliable toy train.

Quick facts

  • Distance: Pathankot to Dharamshala ~85–90 km; McLeod Ganj ~95–100 km
  • Road time: typically 3–3.5 hours to Dharamshala; add 30–45 minutes for McLeod Ganj
  • Taxi fare: approximately ₹2,200–2,600 for a sedan, ₹3,000–3,500 for an SUV (verify current rates before travelling)
  • Bus fare: approximately ₹215–500 depending on service type, with a dozen or more HRTC departures daily
  • Toy train: the Pathankot–Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge service remains suspended on the Pathankot section as of mid-2026 — do not plan around it

Why do travellers arrive via Pathankot?

Two railway stations serve the town: Pathankot Junction and Pathankot Cantt, a few kilometres apart. Overnight trains from Delhi, including the Dhauladhar Express from Delhi Sarai Rohilla, arrive in the morning — a schedule that suits hill travel well, because it leaves the whole day for the climb into Kangra. Train schedules and running days change, so check the current timetable before booking.

Flying is the faster alternative if fares cooperate: Gaggal Airport near Dharamshala handles direct flights, and our Gaggal Airport transfer guide covers that side of the journey. But trains to Pathankot are cheaper, more predictable in monsoon than hill flights, and easier to book late — which is why the Pathankot transfer remains the workhorse route into Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.

How much does a taxi from Pathankot to Dharamshala cost?

Taxis wait outside both stations and at the bus stand, and daytime arrivals can usually find a cab without pre-booking. Online aggregators list one-way sedan fares of approximately ₹2,200–2,600 and SUVs at roughly ₹3,000–3,500, though counter rates at the station can run higher, especially for early-morning arrivals with luggage. Treat these numbers as estimates and confirm the total fare — including toll and any McLeod Ganj climb — before departure.

A few practical points from this specific route:

  • Ask for a drop point, not just a town name. McLeod Ganj's centre is often gridlocked on weekends, and the last kilometre can take longer than the previous ten.
  • If your stay is above Temple Road or on a steep approach lane, tell the driver in advance; some lanes are not sedan-friendly.
  • Families and groups of three or more usually find the cab cheaper per person than premium buses once luggage and the final McLeod Ganj leg are counted.

Fare clarity is exactly the problem Himsafar is being built to fix — preset, transparent fares agreed before pickup rather than negotiated on the kerb. The app is currently in waitlist mode; you can read how the model works on our how it works page.

What about the HRTC bus from Pathankot?

HRTC runs a dozen or more daily services from Pathankot to Dharamshala, from early morning to late evening, with fares from approximately ₹215 for ordinary buses up to around ₹500 for premium AC services. Journey time is typically 3 to 4 hours depending on the bus type and stops. Current schedules are listed on the HRTC Dharamsala division page.

The bus works well for solo travellers with a single bag. The trade-offs: most services terminate at Dharamshala bus stand, so you will still need a local bus or cab up to McLeod Ganj, and ordinary buses stop frequently through Nurpur and Kangra town. If you are weighing a shared cab against the bus for hill routes generally, our comparison of shared seats versus the HRTC bus walks through the real math.

Is the Kangra Valley toy train running from Pathankot?

Mostly no — and this catches travellers out every season. The heritage Kangra Valley narrow-gauge line from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar was cut when the Chakki river bridge washed away in the August 2022 floods. The bridge has since been rebuilt and trial runs conducted, but as of mid-2026 services were still running only on the Kangra–Joginder Nagar section, with the Pathankot stretch awaiting restoration — a delay that has drawn public protests in the valley.

The train, when it runs fully, is a slow scenic ride rather than practical transport — around 6–8 hours to the Kangra area. Enjoy it as an experience if it resumes, but plan your actual transfer by road and check the current status shortly before travelling.

Travelling in July? Plan for monsoon

The Pathankot–Dharamshala highway is generally an all-season road, but July and August bring heavy rain to Kangra. Landslip-prone stretches near the plains-to-hills transition can slow traffic, and cloudbursts occasionally close sections for hours. Build a buffer: aim to complete the road journey in daylight, keep one flexible hour in your plan, and avoid scheduling a same-evening onward activity. Our guide to Himachal monsoon travel covers how to build a rain-safe itinerary in more detail.

If you land in Dharamshala with energy to spare, the short hop up to McLeod Ganj deserves its own small plan — timing, luggage and pickup points are covered in our Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj route guide.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Dharamshala from Pathankot railway station? Approximately 85–90 km by road, typically 3 to 3.5 hours. McLeod Ganj is about 10 km further, adding 30–45 minutes.

Can I get a taxi at Pathankot station without booking in advance? Usually yes, especially during the day — taxis wait at both railway stations and the bus stand. For dawn arrivals off overnight trains, pre-arranging a cab avoids thin availability and inflated counter rates.

Is the toy train from Pathankot to Kangra running? As of mid-2026, no. Services run only between Kangra and Joginder Nagar; the Pathankot section remains suspended despite the rebuilt Chakki bridge. Check the latest status before planning around it.

Which is better for McLeod Ganj — bus or taxi? Buses are cheapest but terminate at Dharamshala, requiring a second leg uphill. A taxi is door-to-door and usually wins for groups, luggage or monsoon arrivals.

Is the road safe during monsoon? Generally yes, but expect slower travel and occasional short closures in heavy rain. Travel in daylight, keep buffers and check conditions before departure.

The practical recommendation

Take the overnight train to Pathankot, then a pre-arranged taxi straight to your stay in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj — that combination is the most predictable door-to-door option, especially in monsoon. Solo travellers on a budget can take the HRTC bus to Dharamshala and a short local ride up the hill. Skip the toy train for transport until the Pathankot section formally resumes, and always confirm fares and road conditions on the day you travel.
